American Idol started this week's auditions in North Carolina on Wednesday, January 23. The show started by showing a feud between Nicki and Mariah shutting down production for the day. They then went back to the beginning of the first day of auditions where Naomi Morris was the first to audition. The fashionista/designer entered the judging room where Minaj suggested she shorten her name to “Omi”. She sang Respect by Aretha Franklin, but did not impress the judges and was the first to head home without a golden ticket. Another one to be sent home was Joel Nemoyer “made history” according to Nicki Minaj by doing his audition laying down. Matthew Muse performed When I Get Where I'm Going by Brad Paisley for the judges, and even showed them some of his dance moves, but according to Randy was “nowhere near ready for this cycle” when Nicki suggested he go into modelling.
Brian Rittenberry, whose wife overcame her battle with appendix cancer, was the first person to be sent to Hollywood, with his wife even getting to meet her celebrity crush Keith Urban. Jimmy Smith impressed the judges with his rendition of God Blessed The Broken Road by Rascal Flats and also earned his golden ticket. Randy surprised Isabelle Gonzales and invited her to sing in front of the judges after her aunt nominated her. She sang Nothing Can Ever Change This Love by Sam Cooke and got one step closer to her dreams when she earned her golden ticket.

The judges start to disagree with each other, and Summer was the straw that broke the camel's back as she sand Lean on Me by the Temptations. She won over Nicki easily, but the other judges had more questions about her sound. Summer earned four yeses, but Nicki had something to say about their debate over Summer's sound, which set off an argument between Nicki, Mariah, and even Randy. Nicki left the set after feeling disrespected by Randy and Mariah.
Day Two started with all four judges there, and Brandi Hamilton was the first audition of the day. A Navy reservist, she sang All I Can Do Is Cry by Etta James. She became the first “yes” of the day as the judges said she “lights up the room”. The judges seem to be in an awkward truce (even Nicki and Mariah) as auditions continue.
Ashley Smith, renamed “Blondie” by Nicki, sang Cowboy Casanova by Carrie Underwood. All four judges liked her, Mariah even called her effervescent, and she earned her golden ticket. Another singer going to Hollywood was Janelle Arthur who wowed the judges with Where The Blacktop Ends by Keith Urban.
Keith Urban leaves to support his wife who was accepting an award, and Candace Glover returns to audition after being cut in Vegas last season. She easily gets a golden ticket, Mariah even asking if they could listen to her all day, and Nicki claiming she is “obsessed” with Candace.
Brad Harris, who used to make wrestling videos in high school, auditioned with A Whole New World from the movie Aladdin, but was not destined to see a new world in Hollywood as he was sent home without his golden ticket.
Theresa was the last to audition, her boyfriend who almost died last year after a car accident, didn't even know she was auditioning. She walked in and sang Fresh Prince of Bel Aire with her daughter London, who idolizes Nicki, in tow. With her unique spin on The Fresh Prince earned her a spot in Hollywood, and her daughter earned a picture with her idol Nicki Minaj.
Auditions continued Thursday (January 24) in Baton Rouge. Auditions kicked off with former pageant girl, Megan Miller, who left the hospital after an accident against her doctors wishes, to sing in front of the judges. She sang Something's Got a Hold On Me by Etta James and set Baton Rouge off to a good note with an easy yes. She left with her golden ticket and headed off to get surgery for an infection resulting from her accident.
Self dubbed "socially awkward" Charlie Askew was the next to audition, growing up not fitting any specific diagnosis he said that music was what helped him come out of his shell. He sang Breakthrough by Queen and Nature Boy by Nat King Cole and was put through by the judges who loved his "dark mysterious" style.
Maddie Assel was the nominated audition of this episode, nominated by her grandmother she sang Oh Darling by the Beatles. Judges loved that she had her own singing style and gave her four yeses, putting her through to Hollywood.
Following a slew of bad auditions was Paul Jolley who sang Rascal Flats' I Won't Let Go who managed to turn the tides in Baton Rouge and got his ticket to Hollywood.
Christopher Barthel, who performs with an alter ego Nicki dubbed "Mushroom", brought 'the fire' singing If I Had You by Adam Lambert. Although his performance was entertaining to say the least, it was not enough to earn a spot in Hollywood.
Dr. Calvin Peters, who is finishing his residency at the veteran's hospital, sang Whenever, Wherever, Whatever by Maxwell. Mariah, who found him very handsome, loved his voice and the fact that he was a singing doctor. He got four yeses and a golden ticket.
After another montage of bad auditions firefighter was Dustin Watts immediately greeted with Nicki asking if he had a girlfriend. He earned his spot in Hollywood with the song She's Every Woman by Garth Brooks.
The last audition of the night was Burnell Taylor, who came from a very musical household that had been hit by Huricane Katrina. He sang I'm Here from The Color Purple and earned a standing ovation and even made Mariah Carey cry before getting his golden ticket.
Be sure to tune in next week when auditions head to San Antonio and California.
