American Idol had it 12th season premiere last night, January 16. The judges kicked off the season with auditions in New York. It didn't take long for Nicki and Mariah to let their claws out as they began back and forth bickering with Keith Urban caught in the middle all night.
One of the memorable contestants of the night were Tenna Torres, who won Mariah over long before her audition when she sang for the diva at "Camp Mariah" and brought photos that Mariah was intent on keeping. She made it through to Hollywood along with Christina "Isabelle" who proved that talent comes in all shapes and sizes as she lost a substantial amount of weight before auditioning. Frankie Ford showed that he could overcome anything as he revealed that he made a living singing on the subway.
Some of the less fortunate contestants were Michael Bounopane, who broke up a fight between Nicki and Mariah as he stomped and sang along to We Will Rock You and James Bae, who looked up to Justin Bieber and even tried to win over Nicki's heart before leaving without a golden ticket but able to get a kiss from Nicki.
One of the more heartbreaking stories of the night was Evan Ruggiero, who was a dancer and singer before losing his leg to bone cancer who did not make it through to Hollywood.

Day two in New York brought some laughs as Benjamin Gaisey strolled in looking like a Michael Jackson impersonator, but was unable to evoke Jackson's talent as he did not make it through. Another amusing act was Albert Chang who performed his rendition of Phantom of the Opera and earning a "compliment" from Nicki who said he had better range than Mariah, but it was not enough to get four yeses.
Among those lucky enough to make it through to Hollywood on day two were Sarah Restuccio, who proved she was not a one trick pony as she sang not only a country song, but shocked the judges by rocking Nicki Minaj's Superbass. Angela Miller proved that with enough effort you can do anything as she stunned the judges with her voice and revealed that she suffered hearing loss in both ears. One of the more colorful, literally, acts of the night was Gurpreet Singh Sarin, The "Turbanator" who managed to win his way to Hollywood by comparing one of his turbans to Nicki's "marigold" wig.
Auditions came to Chicago tonight starting the day with Machenzie Wasner, who earned her "yes" singing Whenever You Come Around, which her dad wrote with Wince Gill. Stephanie Schimel fought for her way into Hollywood as Nicki claims that she didn't "look like a star".
Melissa Bush turned out in a pink and silver jumpsuit was not lucky enough to earn her spot in Hollywood. A favorite of Nicki's was Kevin Navity, who made Randy feel like he was "at a bad auction" with his rendition of One Week by the Barenaked Ladies.
Day two turned out some attractive talent as Josh Holiday, Griffin Peterson, and Johnny Keyser all made it through to Hollywood. Johnny it turns out, had made it to Hollywood last season, but was unable to make the top 24. Mariah Pulice made a kindred spirit in judge Mariah Carey, and blew the judges away with her rendition of Let It Be and her story of overcoming anorexia. Street Performer Casban also earned her way to Hollywood, but let camera's know she has no intention of winning, she just wanted to make it to Hollywood.
One of the most memorable acts of the evening was Lazaro Arbos, a boy from Cuba who struggled with a stutter throughout his life. When he started singing however, his incredible and amazing voice showed no sign of struggling with a stutter, easily earning his spot in Hollywood as Nicki called his story "inspiring".
Day two didn't let down with it's share of "no's" as "The Miserables" appears, a reel of some of the worst acts of the night. "The Miserables" is followed by Ashley Curry, a musical theater major who looked promising, but let the judges down with her rendition of Mama Knows Best by Jesse J.
Be sure to tune in next Wednesday on Fox at 8/7C as the auditions continue!
