First off, our apologies for not providing a Gleeview last week, but let's dive into this weeks mid-season finale!
It's Christmas (and Hanukkah) time on Glee again! This year the show spent the holiday's paying homage to the classic Love, Actually and had five mini-stories that all wrapped up in the end during Thursday night's episode. The storyline included stories from Artie, Kurt, Brittany and Sam, the Puckerman brothers, and Sue and Marley. Let's break it all down!
We'll start with Artie's storyline. Artie realizes that he's really the glue that holds New Directions together after he falls out of his wheelchair and hits his head. In that time, Artie takes a concussion induced-nap where he has an It’s a Wonderful Life–style dream about what McKinley would be like if he’d never been paralyzed. It's a crazy world as Glee club never formed, Rory is his guardian angel, Finn, Puck and the boys are all homophobic bullies and Kurt is a year behind with Blaine never even entering the picture. And we had Mr. Shue as a drunk and still married to Teri and sadly Quinn died after never emotionally recovering from her car crash. So sad and dark, especially for a Christmas episode.
Next up we got Kurt and Blane. As Rachel heads out with her dads on Rosie O’Donnell cruise, Kurt decides to spend Christmas alone in NYC. But Burt heads to New York to visit Kurt, bringing with him a Christmas tree and memories of his son's late mother, we got to the bad news that he has prostate cancer. Though it was caught early, Burt tells his NYADA-bound son the best advice he's learned: keep the people you care about close to you no matter what. And that's when Kurt reconnects with Blane, although they don't officially get together, they sing a duet of "White Christmas" as they go ice skating.
The Puckerman brothers unite for Hannukah as Puck comes back to McKinley to "do research for his screenplay" and to talk Jake into coming back to L.A. with him for the holidays. Once there the brothers sing "Hanukkah Oh Hanukkah" on the Paramount lot. But after Jake learns Puck's lavish L.A. life is a lie, the half-brothers head back to Ohio and reunite their mothers over a holiday dinner at Breadstix, (where else would they go?) where a new family tradition is started.
Brittany and Sam tie the knot. The couple firmly believe the Mayan apocalypse is going to happen, so they get married by Coach Bieste. But when the apocalypse doesn't actually happen, Brittany and Sam are happy to find out that Coach Bieste was just pretending to be a Mayan high priestess. Sam breaks into a performance of "Jingle Bell Rock," which is interesting considering that Chord Overstreet (Sam)'s real-life brother Nash Overstreet of Hot Chelle Rae also released their own version of "Jingle Bell Rock" this year.
And finally we had Sue and Marley. It's interesting that this season we have had Sue being the snarky, bit of a jerk she's always kind of been and in Thursday night's episode she played Santa when she draws Marley's mom Millie Rose in the faculty Secret Santa hat. After overhearing that the family can't afford holidays, and would rather use what money they do have treating Marley's eating disorder, Sue and Becky break into the Rose household where they leave behind presents, a tree, and $800 for therapy. Millie comes to thank her, and Sue tells her that single mothers have to stick together.
The episode ends with an Artie-organized winter wonderland-themed performance of "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" that also reaches Puck and Jake, Sam and Brittany, at Breadstix, and of course Blaine, Kurt and Burt in New York.
What did you think of Glee, Actually ?Glee returns Thursday, January 24 on FOX! And we can't wait for it to return!
