Yesterday I spoke to Thomas Mann and Zoey Duetch, the stars of the upcoming movie, Beautiful Creatures. They both had awesome set stories, favorite cast members and a totally awesome time filming, and they told us all about it!
Are there any similarities between you and your character?
Thomas: Yeah I'm super funny, so it's like, you I'm just kidding. I think Link, he's such a lovable guy, he doesn't take anything too seriously. I guess I try and take things not too seriously to an extent, but other than that he's very loyal, and I'm loyal to my friends.
Zoey: You are.
I say in terms of playing Emily, hardest personal challenge, biggest personal challenge was finding a way not to judge her. And the way for me to do that was to try and understand her, and sympathize with her, and relate to her. The way I broke it down she is a girl with a broken heart and doesn't have the right tools to deal with it, so I can relate to her in that sense.

What did you like about your character?
Thomas: I like the way link dresses. He's got a groovy style. Everything he wears, we wears a lot of vintage clothes. I joked, I didn't want to be the "hat guy" when we were doing our wardrobe fittings, sure enough every single look I've got a hat on. And it kinda became part of the character and now it's something I really like about him.
What was your favorite memory of making this movie?
Thomas: Getting to hang out with all my new friends.
Zoey: Other than the filming and getting to hang out, Thomas and I went on an alligator tour.
Thomas: We went on these big airboats in the swamp and the tour guide was like friends with this 14 foot alligator.
Zoey: Vicky! It was 100 years old, and the guy was like "this is my friend" Thomas and I were like "this is weird." Like throwing her giant pieces of chicken and marshmallows.
Thomas: It was definitely something you could only do there.
You filmed a lot of different scenes all over the place for this movie. What was your favorite one to film and why?
Thomas: My favorite scene to shoot was, I liked all my scenes with Aldan. My first scene, the first scene you see my character was when he's picking me up from school. It's so fast paced and we're moving it just feels like they've been friends for a long time and it's just fun banter between them. You really get a feel for their relationship.
Zoey: My favorite scene, because of visual effects, didn't make it into the movie, but it was a scene between Aldan and I. And I'm hoping it makes it on to the DVD, but yeah for scenes in the movie the scene in the classroom. It's really uncomfortable to watch, someone said that to me today and it resonated with me that it's really uncomfortable to watch. There's a lot of weird religious undertones.
What did you find most difficult about the roles?
Zoey: For me it was just not judging the character. I felt like when you judge someone you're playing it doesn't feel real to yourself, and it doesn't feel real to the audience.
Thomas: I just wanted to make sure Link seemed like a real small town kid. I didn't want him to be too sophisticated or too cool. He's just kinda a goofy guy. I just wanted to embrace that. He's very just an everyman.
Do you think Beautiful Creatures will be more or as successful as Twilight?
Thomas: MORE successful.
Zoey: I think it's a cool movie and people will enjoy it and it will make them feel things.
Thomas: I hope people appreciate it as it's own thing, it's something completely different.
What attracted you guys to this movie?
Thomas: The story just seemed like a really cool thing. When I got the audition I just knew the basics, that it was a supernatural love story.
Zoey: Well we didn't get to read the script or know the story before auditioning. The only thing I knew was that she was southern, and when I got it I was like "Woah this is crazy".
Thomas: I guess I liked the idea of taking on the challenge of being to small town southern kid. Also once I met with Richard I just knew he was such an easy person to work with, he was so caring and thoughtful.
Zoey: And then after we both became part of it we were like "Look at this cast! How did that happen?"
Who was your favorite to work with in the cast?
Zoey: Thomas, haha, but I have to say because I worked the most with Aldan. After I shot a bunch of stuff with him, after I saw the movie I came up to him like a fangirl. He's so well read and not pretentious, he's such a treat to work with.
Thomas: I really appreciated everyone I worked with, I worked a lot with Aldan, he's such a fun guy. I worked a lot with Emmy, and she really pushes you, she's so intense, like trying to hold your own with her, it pushes you. And Emma Thomson, she played my mom and we bonded, we had these great conversations.
