We got the chance to talk to R5 during their appearance in Minneapolis yesterday (11/21/12). R5 is a family band made up of 21 year-old Riker Lynch on bass, 16 year-old Ross Lynch on rhythm guitar, 19 year-old Ratliff, 18 year-old Rocky Lynch, and 19 year-old keyboardist Rydel Lynch.
"Basically we are R5 because all of our names start with R and there’s 5 of us – that’s how we got our name and we’re all related except for Ratliff who is basically family just not blood related," Riker told us.
Not only are they a band, but Ross and Riker each have roles on some very popular television shows! Ross stars as Austin on Disney Channel's hit comedy Austin and Aly meanwhile Riker plays Jeff the Warbler on Glee.

We asked Ross a little bit about Austin and Aly, here's what he had to say about the show: "It’s basically a show about four people and about Austin who is a performer and then his songwriter Aly and they’re best friends and their journey of making it big and it’s basically a comedy sitcom."
The show is currently in it's second season and following R5's tour Ross will be headed back to set to film some more: "We’re still on season 2 actually so after this I just go back to filming more episodes."
We then asked Riker a little bit about his role on Glee: "Every once in awhile I get called in to play Jeff the Warbler and we’ll be on this Thursday (11/22) and next Thursday (11/29) I think."
So how exactly did they get started? We asked them all about it:
"We were just in our basement like performing like N’Sync and all that stuff when we were like five and we decided to play instruments and move out to California and met Ratliff and it all came to ferrision. And they’re like ‘you play drums right?’ and I’m like ‘yes I do’ and they said ‘let’s jam’ and we jammed and hear we are."
Of course being the only girl in a band full of boys has got to be tough, right? We asked Rydel what it's like:
"They’re crazy and I’m just used to it I guess. I have to live with it, I don’t have a choice," she said. Then the guys chimed in saying: "She’s kinda like one of us, we play football with her, she’s better than Ratliff."
And with today being Thanksgiving here in the United States, of course we had to ask them what their plans were: "We’re gonna chill with our family and friends. We actually got some family here in Minnesota so we might stay here, enjoy some turkey here. What about that sweet potato, roundhouse stuff? That’s from Boston Market unless you get it homemade then it’s great."
Sounds like a trip to Boston Market was made, sounds great to us! For more on R5 follow them on Twitter and check out their official website at R5rocks.com.
