One Direction took a trip to Africa a few weeks ago as part of their involvement with the charity Comic Relief. The boys visited the poverty-stricken city of Accra in the country of Ghana where they filmed parts of the video for their Red Nose Day charity single, a cover of Blondie's "One Way or Another" which they will be performing at the upcoming BRIT Awards. And when they visited with children just a few years younger than them, the boys admit they were brought to tears.
"We all had moments. If you get involved in it and you don’t cry you’re superhuman," Harry told The Mirror. "We've seen appeal films before so we thought we knew what it’s like. But when you’re there and you get the smells, your eyes hurt from the smoke, you cough, you’re feeling it all."

"The crazy thing is, when I went to school not one person wanted to be there. Yet you go into a school in Ghana and every child loves it. It’s amazing to see. There are 10-year-old kids speaking better French than I can," he added.
The boys said they chose to film the video for their charity single on their own to help save money, they don't collect any money from the single - 100% of the money goes to Comic Relief.
"We didn't want to make a massive expensive video because that’s just a big waste of money. So we kinda made it ourselves," Niall said.

Liam says he hopes people will download the single and help support the cause because he'll never forget what he experienced. "We just want people to buy the single and help raise as much money as possible," he said. "By buying the song, together we’ll change people’s lives. What an amazing thing to do. Buy music that you like and change lives," Louis added. The band hopes that once people hear them perform their charity single live for the first time on the BRIT Awards that even non-1D fans will go out and purchase the song. "We can’t wait to get out there at the Brits. We really want to give it a good performance. It’s for such a great cause," Zayn said. |
Speaking of the BRIT Awards, the guys think they don't stand a chance at this year's awards despite winning Best British Single last year. 1D is nominated for Best British Band this year up against bands like Mumford & Sons and Muse.
"We don’t stand a chance," Louis said.
"The category is absolutely insane. We’re massive fans of Mumford & Sons so to be in the same category as them...We're just gonna see what happens," Liam added.
The BRIT's go down on February 20 meanwhile Red Nose Day takes place on March 15. In the UK, One Direction's charity single is available for pre-order now with it officially being released on February 17.
