One Direction's main trio of songwriters revealed that their secret for success is very simple, they just kept it basic and didn't try to make it cool and hip. Carl Falk, Rami Yacoub and Savan Kotecha, who are responsible for three of the boys' biggest songs to date, "What Makes You Beautiful," "One Thing," and "Live While We're Young," talked about One Direction's secret to success recently.
"It felt like everyone tried to do boy bands by going to the cool, hip producers who were coming up," says Kotecha told Billboard. "We wanted to make it very vanilla. You're aiming for teens and tweens with boy-band guilty pleasure music. We weren't trying to be urban or rhythmic, and they happened to share the same vision."
"Each of the songs have signature riffs - something so people can play YouTube versions of our songs," Falk added while talking about how both him and Niall Horan are guitar players. "We wanted to do something where we didn't copy anything right off. We're trying to do our own thing a little bit, even if it's just guitar parts."
The trio of songwriters also worked for veteran boy band Westlife. But as One Direction grows up the boys have gotten more involved in the music making process - the boys helped co-write a few of the tracks on Take Me Home and Niall played the background guitar on six of the tracks.
Kotecha even told Billboard that Liam is becoming one of the bands strongest musical assets, "He's growing to become a great songwriter."

"Somebody could have the first initial idea after we heard a melody or a track, and someone would chip in a few works and then Liam or someone else could come in and by end of the day we'd have a song," Zayn Malik told Billboard about One Direction's process of writing. "We wanted to feel like we were giving a little more back in our personal lives, so what better way than to get involved in the writing process?"
How cool is that? Hopefully One Direction gets to write a few more tracks in the future!
