Depending on which way you look it, One Direction's movie, This Is Us, either came in first or second in the US box office over the weekend. For the normal three-day box office, the boys topped the box office with $17 million. However, The Hollywood Reporter reports, when taking in consideration the Labor Day weekend as a whole, the boys come in #2 behind The Butler, which grossed $20 million.
Overall, One Direction helped Hollywood enjoy a record setting Labor Day weekend box office, with revenue reaching an estimated $156 million, beating the record set in 2007 with $148 million.
And although they didn't beat the opening weekend numbers set by previous concert films, Hannah Montana: Best of Both Worlds Concert ($31 million) or Justin Bieber: Never Say Never ($29.5 million), they did beat the documentary offerings of Katy Perry: Part of Me ($7.2 million) and Jonas Brothers: The 3D Concert Experience ($12.7 million).
And even more good news for One Direction, This Is Us has already earned an estimated $31.5 MILLION WORLDWIDE! That makes the movie a major win for the boys and the studio overall considering it only took about $10 million to make the movie.
Be sure to check out my review of This Is Us, which I called "a emotional, funny, and engaging inside look at the world's biggest pop group" and "a must see for any One Direction fan."
