The Voice has been on for four seasons so far and is gearing up for season 5 in the fall, but despite being one of the highest rated shows on television the NBC signing competition has failed to produce a major superstar. But on the other hand, other singing competition shows like American Idol have produced hit makers in the past with Carrie Underwood, Phillip Phillips, Kelly Clarkson, and more and The X Factor has produced several acts globally like Olly Murs, Cher Lloyd, and of course One Direction.
But while addressing reporters at the Television Critics Association summer press tour in Los Angeles over the weekend, coach Adam Levine said that the goal of the show isn't really to find a superstar but more to entertain the audience.
"I think it would be nice if we were to launch a huge star," Adam Levine said, but, "a lot of things have to happen in order for that to take place. I think the goal of the show is to do what we can do for these amazing singers while they’re on the show."
"I think that we all know that the lightning in a bottle you have to capture in order to be successful in this business is extraordinarily difficult," he continued. "I’m not sure that that is the overall mission statement of the show."
"The immediacy of winning and becoming a huge star is a fairy tale that we would love to see take place, but it’s still a fairy tale. … If you’re not in the negative in this business, then you’re succeeding."
What do you think of Adam's comments? Do you think it's unrealistic to expect contestants on the show to become stars when other singing competition shows have done it?
