Summer is just around the corner and along with that will come a stand out song that will be remembered as THE summer song of 2013. Around this time last year, Carly Rae Jepsen's "Call Me Maybe" was already starting to climb the charts before reaching #1 and dominating the radio all season, nearly everybody knew what that song was.
So far this year though there hasn't been a clear stand-out quite yet, Mackelmore & Ryan Lewis' "Can't Hold Us" would've been a good pick but it has already reached #1 on Billboard and might be peaking a bit early to be considered the summer song of 2013. Justin Timberlake's "Mirrors" has the same issue and there doesn't appear to be another single from part 1 of The 20/20 Experience that could make as big of impact. The same could be said for songs like "Feel The Moment" and "Just Give Me A Reason."
This means the crown for summer song of 2013 is as open as ever, but there's certainly no shortage of possible songs. In no particular order, let's take a look at a few of the possibilities. All of these songs are currently gaining traction on the charts and very could end up taking the crown.

"Blurred Lines" - Robin Thicke (feat. Pharrell Williams & T.I.)
This song is a early favorite to be the summer song of 2013 by many people in the industry, including Ellen DeGeneres. And after performances on The Voice and The Ellen DeGeneres Show last week the song is gaining even more traction. The song went to #1 on iTunes already and is making its way up on top 40 radio and these three are on their way to domination with this song.
"Get Lucky" - Daft Punk (feat. Pharrell Williams)
The never aging Pharrell Williams has not one but TWO possible songs in the running for summer song of 2013. This time he teams up with Daft Punk and the first single from their new album. The song is already Daft Punk's biggest selling song of their career and the groovy and feel-good sound of this track may be just the right thing to put Daft Punk in the mainstream and help them dominate US radio for the first time.
"I Want Crazy" - Hunter Hayes
Hunter Hayes has already accomplished the hard part, making a country song become a success on top 40 radio and this song could do it again. After the success "Wanted" had on both country and top 40 radio it wouldn't be a shocker if he decided to try to repeat success with "I Want Crazy." As the lead single from his Encore album due out in June, the song is already making noise on country radio and the song has that fun sound that could surely be a hit on top 40 radio as well. Only time will tell.
"Cruise (Remix)" - Florida-Georgia Line (feat. Nelly)
Let's stick with country for a moment, this song has some real potential to become a summer smash. The song and video just scream summer! The song has already peaked on country charts but it's been slowing raising on the top 40 radio charts with lots of support from some big radio stations. Florida-Georgia Line and Nelly might be a odd combination but it's a combination that works and works really well. Nelly might be the only rapper that could work with a country duo and make it sound really good.
"The Way" - Ariana Grande (feat. Mac Miller)
Few new artists got the attention Nickelodeon star Ariana Grande did when she released "The Way" with Mac Miller, her first single from her debut album. Within hours the song when to #1 on iTunes and she was a guest on the New York based nationally syndicated Elvis Duran and the Morning Show, something many new artists don't get to do right away. Radio stations are loving the song and it continues to steadily raise each week. Plus the song draws many comparisons to Mariah Carey and the mass audiences are loving that.
"The Other Side" - Jason Derulo
Jassonnn Derulloooo is back baby! After recovering from a neck injury, Jason is back with the lead single from his upcoming new album. The song is doing pretty well on radio as it consistently raises in spins every week after becoming the most-added song on top 40 radio so far this year and the second-biggest radio launch in history just last month. Much like a lot of artists, Jason is making the rounds at radio promoting the single and getting the word out. With the big launch this song had expect it to do very well.
"Chloe (You're The One I Want)" - Emblem3
I might be going out on a limb once again with this one, but c'mon three surfer dudes from California with a feel-good song with guitars, it's a good pick. This may not be THE jam of the summer because of the song's target demographic, but it has potential to be a hit during the summer nonetheless. The song is starting to gain traction on top 40 radio, increasing in spins every week, and the boys are establishing themselves with radio stations currently by paying a visit to a few of the major one's and even being part of the line-up for their big spring concerts. Watch out for Emblem3.
"Crickets" - Drop City Yacht Club (feat. Jeremih)
Here's another wildcard for you, this up and coming duo teams with Jeremih for a pretty sweet song that is starting to get a little bit of attention on top 40 radio. It's tough to tell if it will be big hit or not because the duo is mostly unheard of by the mainstream audience, but having someone like Jeremih who has had summer success in the past with "Birthday Sex" and "Down On Me" certainly helps. The song is pretty catchy and you have to love those actual cricket sounds in the background.
"Boomerang" - The Summer Set
This song hasn't gained a whole lot speed on top 40 radio quite yet, but don't be surprised if that changes soon. The Summer Set was just crowned the winner of the Macy's iHeartRadio Raising Star contest, which means they'll be playing at this year's iHeartRadio Music Festival in September. Expect that to be a bit of a factor as the festival approaches, look for iHeartRadio radio stations especially to potentially add the song. The song already has support from SiriusXM and anything can happen. Not to mention this band is called The SUMMER Set, they're destined to have a summer smash at some point.
"Brokenhearted" - Lawson (feat. B.o.B)
This one is probably the biggest wildcard and a major long-shot because the song may not even be released in the US this summer. However, for folks in the UK, it's very possible you could be hearing this song a lot on your radios this summer. The song got its premiere on Capital FM last week and received very high praise and is arguably Lawson's best song to date. Only time will tell though, the song is available to pre-order on UK iTunes now and will be available in July.
Of course there's a lot of songs that I didn't mention, such as Avril Lavigne's "Here's To Never Growing Up," Selena Gomez's "Come and Get It," and Icona Pop's "I Love It" among many others, but as mentioned above the possibilities are wide open and the summer song is really anybody's guess at this point. Plus what's the point of a prediction list if you don't throw in a few wildcards, right?
And let's not forget it's very possible that we haven't even heard the song that will be the biggest smash yet. JT has another album coming out in September and it wouldn't be far-fetched to expect the first single from that to be released in mid-summer.
What are your predictions for the summer song of 2013?
