For the first time in 13 years, music sales climbed in 2012! British artists Adele, One Direction, and Mumford & Sons dramatically helped legal music sales climb 0.3% in 2012 to £10.9billion ($16.5billion). That may not seem like much, but when you consider that sales have been consistently dropping for years, even a little growth is nice to see.
The figures were released yesterday by the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI), which represents over 1,400 record companies worldwide, shows that Adele's album, 21, topped the charts for the second year in a row with One Direction and Taylor Swift right behind her.
Here's a look at the top 10 albums last year along with the number of copies sold:
1. Adele (21), 8.3million
2. Taylor Swift (Red), 5.2m
3. One Direction (Up All Night), 4.5m
4. One Direction (Take Me Home), 4.4m
5. Lana Del Rey (Born To Die), 3.4m
6. P!nk (The Truth About Love), 2.6m
7. Rod Stewart (Merry Christmas Baby), 2.6m
8. Rihanna (Unapologetic), 2.3m
9. Mumford & Sons (Babel), 2.3m
10. Maroon 5 (Overexposed), 2.2m
Nice to see the music industry growing again - let's hope it stays that way in 2013! Support your favorite artists and legally download music.
