Hello everyone! I'm back again with my breakdown. I meant to make this a weekly thing but I didn't do one last week simply because there wasn't a whole bunch of interesting topics to discuss last week. This week however, is a whole different animal. Lots of news happened this past week from a stupid One Direction fan "documentary" on UK television to Nathan Sykes speaking out against cyber bullying. Anyway, here's my Weekly Breakdown.
"Crazy About One Direction" Fan Documentary Airs on UK Television
"Crazy About One Direction" Fan Documentary Airs on UK Television
On Thursday UK television station Channel 4 aired a fan documentary they called "Crazy About One Direction" in which they showcased some of the most extreme One Direction fans. I didn't write about the documentary on the main news page because I felt it didn't deserve attention but after Liam went on a reasonable rant about about it on Twitter, all the other media outlets wrote about it. The documentary was a ridiculous and unfair representation of fans. The Daily Star said it best, "Crazy About One Direction was a horrible, mean-spirited piece of television, seemingly setting out with no other purpose than to humiliate the dozen-or-so fans who’d been persuaded to take part."
There's a lot I could say about the whole thing, the majority of media outlets are extremely misinformed when it comes to One Direction fans. First off the majority of fans are NOT that crazy, least no crazier than what you'll find in any other fandoms such Justin Bieber, Big Time Rush, The Wanted, etc. Secondly, not all fans are girls - One Direction has PLENTY of guy fans as well (me included). Thirdly, and I think this is the most important of all, is how they portray girl fans who know everything about them, go to their concerts and scream, follow them on social networks, etc as crazy when really it's no different than what boys and grown ass men do for their favorite sports team. The fans are passionate and dedicated. It's all the same, just different demographics.
Basically what I'm saying is, leave the fans alone! Let them be crazy for One Direction (or whoever else they might be a fan of). Last time I checked it's not a crime to be passionate and be a fan of something.
As Liam said, the whole thing was complete "bullshit."
Liam and Zayn Auction Clothes to Raise Money for New Charity
I'm gonna stick with the theme of One Direction for a moment, this week it was revealed that Liam and Zayn from the band auctioned off their hand decorated bedtime "onesies" for charity. The duos clothes went for £7,000, helping the charity be on track to raise £50,000 by 2015. One thing I noticed was that I here on Hit Zone was really only one of a handful of websites that reported on this. This is a cool thing! These boys do a lot for charity and a lot of good but you hardly ever hear about it unless you truly look for it. Hell Liam and Zayn are my favorites in One Direction (sorry Niall, Louis, and Harry) and I didn't even know about this til a news tip came to me. I just feel like as a society we're so interested in the sleazy, negative side of celebrity news that gets inside their personal lives than the good that some of them do in the world.
That's one thing that I hope I can bring you on Hit Zone: a positive, different spin on stories you see elsewhere and sometimes bring you stories you won't see on most other sites, such as this one.
Nathan Sykes Speaks Out Against Cyber Bullying
That's one thing that I hope I can bring you on Hit Zone: a positive, different spin on stories you see elsewhere and sometimes bring you stories you won't see on most other sites, such as this one.
Nathan Sykes Speaks Out Against Cyber Bullying
I was just talking about how I try to bring you a different spin on stories you see elsewhere, this article is a great example. The Wanted's Nathan Sykes spoke out about cyber bullying this week and he spoke from personal experience from when the whole Twitter war between certain members of The Wanted and certain members of One Direction was happening. A lot of other media outlets choose to focus and dwell on the fact that he used that whole One Direction vs. The Wanted as an example, well I (and some others, not many) focused on the content of the interview as a whole and the advice Nathan offered at the end. The true message he was trying to get across about how you can stop cyber bullies and how you don't need them in your life because you can block them and chose to ignore them and not give them that power because they're anonymous cowards.
That's it for this week. Go check out my personal favorite post of the week, the top 10 moments from One Direction's Take Me Home Tour in North America. Three of my friends (and fellow One Direction fans) helped me put the list together and write the commentary for it and I'm pretty happy with the list and the way it turned out. Check it out and leave a comment with your favorite moment from the TMH Tour so far!
